Crowd surfing, the thrilling act of being passed over a concert audience, traces its roots to the rock and punk scenes of the 1970s. Often credited to Iggy Pop, who leaped into the crowd during The Stooges’ performance at the 1970 Cincinnati Summer Pop Festival, it marked an early rebellious staple in live music.    By the 1980s, artists like Peter Gabriel popularized it further, diving “crucifix style” during shows, while Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel brought it to mainstream crowds.
